Improve Your Confidence: When your confidence is low, the concept of loving yourself is completely foreign. You see yourself as lacking and unworthy and feel there’s nothing to love. In fact, there seems to be far more reason to loathe yourself than love yourself.
You see, confidence isn’t something that’s magically going to wash over you by just closing your eyes and wishing for it. It’s something that you work a little bit towards each and every day, until it becomes a natural part of your mindset. Confidence improves by changing both your thoughts and behaviors. You must practice new thoughts and behaviors until you begin to turn the tide of your feelings about yourself. And you must continue practicing them to maintain a healthy love for yourself.
Self-confidence is a very powerful tool which can help us a lot in life. It helps us enjoy every moment we live in a better way and live our life to the fullest. However, many of us lack this spirit, for which we have to remain far from realizing our potential. But you don’t need to worry even if you haven’t got it yet. Self-confidence can not be developed overnight but you need continuous application and persistent preparation on your part. If you do small things, one at a time on a regular basis, you’ll surely get there.
Here are some daily exercises that can help on to improve your confidence.
1. Pay attention to your body language and work on your non-verbal communication
Your body language can instantly demonstrate self-assuredness, or it can scream insecurity. Present yourself in a way that says you are ready to master or take command of any situation. If you look confident and act the part you aspire to reach, you’ll not only feel in control, people will have much more confidence in you as well.
Hold your head high, sit up straight, gently bring your shoulders back to align your spine and look directly at the other person when interacting. Avoid a limp handshake and maintain good eye contact while someone is speaking to you.
2. Groom yourself properly.
This seems like such an obvious one, but it’s amazing how much of a difference a shower and a shave can make in your feelings of self-confidence and for your self-image. take care of your personal hygiene and dress yourself appropriately. Feel happy looking at yourself in the mirror. If you can feel happy about the way you look, you avoid all sorts of self-conscious thoughts about you not looking good and others not fancying you.
3. Think and act positively
Positive energy leads to positive outcomes, so set your mind to the can-do side of any situation, avoiding the negative self-talk that can make you feel less confident. Smile, laugh and surround yourself with happy, positive people. You’ll feel better and the people with whom you work will enjoy your company.
Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the high points of your day and your accomplishments. You will develop more peace and confidence when you are in a grateful state of mind.
4. Be prepared and at your best
A lot of times we are not able to execute things in the best manner, often on grand stages and huge occasions, largely due to the lack of preparation. This can have far-reaching consequences. On one hand, we won’t be able to perform at our best level at the time. Furthermore, on the long run, we may begin to doubt ourselves and get to believe that we can never do things in a better way. This can derail our future endeavors too, trapping us in a vicious circle. But we can avoid this by preparing for the occasion, even if it’s a trivial one and giving our best for it. Gradually, one step after another, we’ll feel we can excel too and this will gradually boost our confidence a lot.
5. Take action
There’s more to being confident than just how you look. You must act the part. Walk up to a stranger at a networking event, or accept a project you’d normally reject. Practice being self-confident and soon it will become second nature.
Inaction breeds doubt and fear, while action breeds confidence and courage. As an exercise, jot down your strengths and weaknesses. Most people will tell you to work on your weaknesses, but use what you’ve got and capitalize on your strengths instead. Once you put more energy into your positive traits, your confidence will start to shine through.
6. Enjoy the moment you’re living in.
It might be hard for many of us but the best way to build the self-confidence and succeed in life as well is to focus completely on the moment one is living in. Allowing yourself to think about bad times or something unpleasant that happened during the day will only trigger negative thoughts in us and is highly detrimental to improve your confidence. We will feel bad about ourselves and cannot perform at our best level too on the thing we’re currently working on. So live in the moment, cherish it, try to do your best and enjoy it.
7. Set a small goal and achieve it.
People often make the mistake of shooting for the moon, and then when they fail, they get discouraged. Instead, shoot for something much more achievable. Set a goal you know you can achieve, and then achieve it. You’ll feel good about that. Now set another small goal and achieve that. The more you achieve small goals, the better you’ll be at it, and the better you’ll feel. Soon you’ll be setting bigger (but still achievable) goals and achieving those too.
8. Stop negative and worrying thoughts.
Stop worrying and developing negative thoughts, constantly worrying about the circumstances and feeling worthless. If you can change things for better, just do it, whatever way you can. And, if you can do nothing about it, why all those constant worries and helplessness? Let go of things. If you couldn’t work it out this time, try your luck next time around or on some other thing. Negative thoughts are highly detrimental to person’s development and well-being. Avoiding negative thoughts and cultivating positive thoughts on everyday basis, can lead you a long way to improve your confidence.
9. Dress the part.
When you look better, you feel better. If you choose clothing and accessories that fit you well, suit your industry and lifestyle, and make you feel good, this will automatically increase your self-esteem. Look like the part you want to play, or in other words, suit up for success. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine in your accessories. Bold jewelry or a colorful tie can be a focal point and a good conversation starter.
Another trite one. But it works. I feel instantly better when I smile, and it helps me to be kinder to others as well. A little tiny thing that can have a chain reaction. Not a bad investment of your time and energy.
